2019 NGA Annual Report

For decades, NGA has been the voice of the independent supermarket industry, achieving wins that allow Main Street grocers to grow their businesses, create jobs, and serve their communities. Independents are the backbone of the U.S. economy, true entrepreneurs, responding to shifting consumer demands with innovation and determination. Independents are working towards a prosperous future and NGA is committed to investing in advocacy, education, and communications efforts to help facilitate this growth.
In the Fall of 2019, after an extensive, national search process, NGA’s Board of Directors announced that Greg Ferrara was selected to lead NGA into the future. On September 1, Peter Larkin – only the second president and CEO of the organization – officially passed the baton to Greg.
While going through this time of transition there was thing that remained constant – our privilege to be the voice of the independent supermarket industry. None of our success would have been possible without the strong support and commitment of our member companies.
As our members deal with an everchanging landscape, NGA continues to make investments that benefit Main Street grocers, while growing The NGA Show, and supporting the NGA Foundation to ensure the supermarket industry has a robust, diverse, and well-trained workforce.
On Capitol Hill, NGA worked quickly to build relationships, working with both sides of the aisle and the White House to shape legislation and policy that benefits independents. NGA claimed several advocacy victories, including advancement of payments legislation, and pushing regulators towards creating a more business friendly climate for independents.
NGA is proud to represent a growing community of over 1,500 independent retail and wholesale supermarket companies that operate nearly 8,500 store fronts nationwide. Independent retail grocers and wholesalers are the economic engines of their communities. With more than $131 billion in sales and nearly a million jobs, independents are the cornerstones of local communities and the national economy. It’s our privilege to represent you as the voice of the independent supermarket industry. We look forward to working with you in the new year as we continue to be at the forefront for the independent supermarket industry.
