Seminar to Address Implicit Bias for Independent Grocers

Session aimed at creating a foundation for diversity and inclusion efforts

Arlington, VA – The NGA Foundation, in partnership with the Washington Food Industry Association, will present an Implicit Bias Seminar on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020, at 1pm EST.

This seminar is designed to be an effective, interactive, comprehensive course that helps leaders, executive teams, managers and associates understand the source of unconscious or implicit bias. It aims to provide context for more effective discourse on race, gender and other forms of bias for institutions that want to change or guide their cultures.

These lessons also help teams to establish a “safe container” for conversations regarding bias, advantage blindness and privilege, and create an essential foundation for diversity and inclusion efforts.

The seminar will be led by Cassandra Walker Pye, founder of 3.14 Communications [ www.314communications.net ], who has enjoyed a lengthy and successful career in communications, government and politics, and as an advocate for corporate interests in global, national, state and local arenas.

“We all have biases that can affect our behaviors. These attitudes – unrecognized on the conscious level but powerful at the unconscious level – influence our choices and decisions,” Pye said. “Cognitive scientists and researchers continue to learn more and more about the human brain, how it functions and how most of our actions, intended or not, are powered at the subconscious level.”

This seminar makes a science-based case for how biases develop naturally and how those biases affect our decisions and actions, in the workplace and beyond. Unconscious bias can impact everything from hiring and promotions, to who receives special assignments, employee evaluations, customer service, sales practices and public safety.

“Awareness of and addressing implicit bias will help retailers create a more welcoming environment for their employees and customers,” said Maggie White, director, NGA Foundation. “This training is part of the NGA Foundation’s renewed commitment to helping independent retailers support diversity and inclusion, a key facet of employee retention.”

Topics to be addressed during the seminar will include:

  • The unconscious mind
  • How can we know our bias if it’s unconscious?
  • De-biasing interventions
  • Unpacking discussions
  • Othering, belonging and inclusion

Deadline to register for the seminar is Nov. 27. 2020. For more information and to register, visit https://cvent.me/ZQ4ADa.
