The SNAP EBT Modernization Technical Assistance Center (SEMTAC) helps grocers modernize and expand their businesses to include electronic benefits.

SEMTAC is a partnership of the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) and the National Grocers Association Foundation. Our industry experts offer free one-on-one support and other resources to businesses pursuing FNS modernization initiatives.

By integrating eCommerce, chip cards, and mobile payments technology, grocers can help more families shop conveniently and securely.

SNAP Online Purchasing Program

EBT Chip Card Technology

Much like traditional credit and debit cards, SNAP EBT technology is quickly transitioning from cards with magnetic stripes to cards that also include a chip, which greatly enhances security. Grocers will need to reach out to their POS providers to plan for the transition. Learn more

SNAP Mobile Payments

Mobile payment methods—like tapping or scanning a smartphone—will be available for SNAP participants in Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, and Oklahoma in the next few years, as an alternative to a physical SNAP card. More states will follow soon! Learn more
